In order to provide law students with an opportunity to gain practical experience in the field, the European Law students’ Association (ELSA), has launched the 9th edition of the European Human Rights Moot Court Competition in cooperation with the Council of Europe.
The competition, which simulates the procedure of complaints to the European Court of Human Rights, is open to teams of 2-4 students coming from the same university. Students should be from ELSA countries as well as from countries that are members of the Council of Europe.
The teams will be evaluated based on their written admissions and the best 20 teams will participate in the preliminary rounds and 2 winning teams will compete in the final round at the European final at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France.
There is an initial participation fee of € 80 per participant.
There will be three Regional Round of the Competition hosted by ELSA Local and/or National Groups.
Each Team will be randomly assigned to a Regional Round:
- 5 – 8 February 2021 – Maastricht, the Netherlands;
- 5 – 8 March 2021 – Lisbon, Portugal;
- 19 – 22 March 2021 – Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
Each team must take part in one Regional Round, and the results from the Regional Round count towards to selection of the teams going to the Final Oral Round.
Accommodation and travel costs to the Regional Round are not be covered by the participation fee.
Each member of the winning team will be awarded with a one-month traineeship at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
The Best Overall Orator will be awarded with a traineeship at the Council of Europe Liaison Office with the European Union in Brussels.
For those who will win the Council of Europe prize and the prize for the Best Overall Orator, ELSA will cover up to 400 EUR of the accommodation costs per person.
Each team registered for the competition can submit up to three clarification questions concerning the case, that will be forwarded and answered by the Case Authors.
